Face Mill Inserts

I have 2 face mills that use inserts and I'm having trouble determining insert size. One of them has inserts that are triangular, no hole, 1/2 inch on each side and 1/8 inch thick. They also fit the other mill. I've found inserts TPG and TPU but all the 1/2 inserts are 3/16 inch. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong place?

Inserts aren't measured by the side/cutting edge for size, they're measure by inscribed circle. Are there any markings on the facemills, etc tool style designation?

There's no markings on the mills. One of the charts on line and in MSC catalog list them by measurement, that's how I know it's a TPU or TPG and the first 2 numbers should be 42.

I see. Yeah that's weird if you are finding 42_ inserts with 3/16" thinkness. "4" is 1/2" I.C. & "2" is 1/8" thinkness. The last number would be corner radius which wouldn't matter for fitting your FM. TP_ inserts have been around forever & are very common. Shouldn't be hard to find the appropriate size you need. Maybe it's just that vendor or possibly a misprint?

I'm not finding 42 inserts, just 32's that are 3/8x1/8 or 43 that are 1/2x3/16. I'll take it to a friend monday and he can figure it out. He's a retired machinist.

Thanx,
Shelly

I've got another endmill without inserts. It's marked "CC-750 W/ 3/4 SHANK ATV-2000 ENDMILL JOB 61-2975E" Any idea what this one takes?

Oh, you're right, I don't have anything that uses TP inserts. I just looked it up. Seems like 32_ & 43_ are the common sizes. Come to think of it, 42 doesn't sound right, not common anyway. Does the clamp have enough room to hold a 43 insert?

Just did a quick check of Kennametal TPGN/TPG, the inscribed circle is 3/8" is measured of the Inscribed Circle, diameter that fits into the the insert not around the tips, so D. It would seem you have TPG32 or 3/8" inserts. See diagram and link, these are 1/8" thick, the length L10 is given as 0.65". If you have the face mill number, sometimes you can find a reference to the insert.

AHA. I figured I was doing something wrong.
I bought a Clausing Kondia FV-1 and it came with loads of tooling. These were in the box. Also got a Jet tool and surface grinder with accessories. It's partially dismantled for cleaning. The mill is up and running. Leveled it and finished wiring today.

Thanx for all the help,
Shelly
