Eye Safety

Greetings all,

This may be something "everybody" knows but it came as unwelcome news to me.

Saturday past I spent a good eight hours cutting, grinding, polishing etc. making some chasing tools for a friend. It was all good, safe, no injuries until I took a shower to clean up for dinner.

While showering I felt eye pain. Today's visit to the eye doctor confirmed that I had a steel sliver stuck in my eye. I will spare you the details. It hurts and vision should return to normal over the next week or so. The world is quite strange right now with one eye fully dilated and the other functioning normally.

Please shower, wash your face, etc. carefully. Apparently this is a fairly common way to injure one's self after all the safety gear has been stored away.

Dale,
Probably not quite so "uncommon". Havent had a metal sliver in my eye, but several times I have found dirt dust grindings etc. after washing. I think they come out of my hair or eyebrows. Once had to go to hospital to get a bunch of glass splinters out of my eyes. Walked right through a plate glass window. Man that was messy. Probably lucky I didnt cut my throat. Worst I got was a bunch of tiny scratches. And sore eyes for a day or 2

Cheers Phil

I've taken the bad habit of using a blowgun to go thru what hair I have and get all the chips off my shoulders, etc. I do shut my eyes and blow pretty much directly at them, but I can't say I really recommend it. I take the risk, but it is a risk. I wear safety glasses most of the time, which have cheater bifocals, or I wear my impact resistant normal glasses. They just don't have side shields.

I've had steel dug out of my eye after spending an entire weekend being miserable. First wife was ophthalmologist assistant, and her boss gave me a good lecture. I started digging them out myself after that. Waiting even a day is too long. Inside the eyelid takes a good bit of abuse if the metal is stuck to the eye, and vise-versa.

After an oil furnace explosion that left me with rust particals embedded in my eyes I am supper careful to always wear glasses. But things do happen and once in a while I will get something in my eye. One thing I have found that works great are the polished magnets that they sell as some kind of toy thing. Not really sure what they are meant to be but here is a picture of them http://www.jjmagneticjewelry.com/images/pocket.jpg.jpg I keep one in a sealed bag in my tool box. I clean it with alcohol then seal it in a clean bag. When I get a small partial in my eye I wash my hands then run the magnet gently around the edge and into the corner on my eye. I have gotten a small chip out this way once from grinding. Hopefully I never have to test this method again. :nono::nono::nono::nono: Not sure if I recommend this but it worked for me use at your own risk. :nono::nono::nono::nono:

Is there a preferred method of showering?
I have never had any problems such as yours. I generally close my eyes, wet my head and hair, soap up, wash head and hair, rinse and then rinse and rub around my eyes, rinse and then open my eyes. It has worked so far.

Preferred method of showering? In water? :))

My eye doc said this is rather common. The magnet idea had popped to mind as well. She said that it would possibly work. Bottom line for me is to try to remember to wash, rinse, rinse again and THEN open eyes.

Is it fitting that as a new member my ranking is SWARF and my first posts are about the same?
