Ever eat humble pie? I did today.

I got a opportunity several years ago to work with our "machinist" on a couple of quick projects and that started my interest in machining. He showed me the basics on the mill and lathe so I went and purchased my own used ones and have been having a blast learning. Since then he has left and a new guy has started, I got to work with him yesterday. I needed to make a quick press tool for bearings out of round aluminum and he unlocked the machines for me and said have fun. He stopped me when I was adjusting the carriage speed on the lathe by selecting the thread per inch and asked me why I would do that. I explained that was how I was shown to do it, was that not the correct way? He patiently explained that I had been doing it wrong all along and showed me the correct way. I dowloaded the manual for my lathe at lunch and presto! there it was in writing. Guess it would help if I read the manual :lmao: Anyway, I came home and tried it on my machine and was impressed. Maybe now I can get rid of those crappy finishes on my material  At least I can say I learned something today :))

Ah, humble pie... Tastes of old gym socks and stomach acid. Generally I avoid it when I can, but sometimes it's all there is. I do find goes down easier if you don't fight it, just dig in.

Sounds like you came out of the experience better than before though, you learned something new, and probably made a friend in the process ;)

Well, it sounds like the guy was good natured about it... and I'm not sure if that qualifies as humble pie because a lot of lathes only have leadscrews and don't even have drivescrews.

Yes, I have found admitting I have no clue makes it so much easier! A old man told me "When eating Crow just remember it goes down a little easier with salt". :)) Feels good to have learned something new and correct, just wish I could have learned it before, I would be more advanced than I am now.
