for varying the speed of the lead screw to cut different pitch threads. Spindle speed will be controlled by those belts

The chart pictured shows the gear combinations required to cut different pitch screw threads. The gears listed on that chart are the "change gears", and the lathe should come with a stack of those gears.

Hold out for a lathe with a Quick Change Gear Box. It will look like this:

and will be at the headstock end of the leadscrew. No change gears needed.
