I treated myself to a set of ER40 collets for Christmas after reading a recent thread here about ER collet sizes. I went with the ER40 primarily to get the extra size capacity.

To use it in my lathe I needed a new backplate and collet chuck. I found the most economical cast iron backplate for my G0602 lathe was from Grizzly. They have the smaller one for $31 that fits their 3 jaw chuck and larger one for $35 that fits their 4 jaw chuck. If anybody is looking for a threaded backplate Grizzly’s parts numbers are P0602054 for the 3 Jaw Chuck Backplate and P0602055 for the 4-Jaw Chuck Backplate.

I also ordered an ER40 collet chuck off ebay. The OD of the chuck was 125mm which matched the smaller Grizzly backplate. Several vendors selling what looked to be the same chuck.

I faced off and trued up the cast iron backplate to mate with the collet chuck. The backplate showed only 0.0005” face and side runout so I was happy. With the collet chuck mounted my indicator shows 0.0025” runout at the collet. I hope to be able to reduce that with some additional cleanup between the backplate and collet chuck and maybe a love tap.

This was not the most glamorous project you will see on this forum but I am quite new to this type of work and it was a fun project for me. I have learned a lot from other members which has helped my confidence. The availability to use the ER40 collets should be quite nice too. I did realize today that I did not order a collet wrench. Oh well there is still time for Santa.

One more thing, who ever said cast iron was messy to machine was spot on.20201213_150059.jpg20201213_150201.jpg
