I have an Enco 93618 surface grinder that is badly out of tram (correct term?) in the Z axis (In and out, I'm still sketchy on terminology) to the tune of 10 thousands over .2 inches. In the long axis the table measures high by about 5 tenths at each end so I'm assuming this is not a wear problem. I can also get about 5 thousands movement total by pushing up and down on the spindle. The Z axis error seems way too much to even think of grinding out and the up and down movement of the spindle seems like something that could be adjusted out, but I have no idea how. The column is bolted to the base so I could add shims to take out as much error as possible but being a complete noob when it comes to surface grinding I need expert help.

Is there a gib adjustment on the vertical slide?

What could cause the saddle to be so tilted front to back?

Does anyone know of a manual for a 93618 Enco?

Sorry for the rambling post but I'm at a loss as to how to proceed at the moment.

TIA

Maybe when it was moved the rollers came out of place.
Get yourself some drawings and carefully disassemble it.
Start with the first issue in/out.
Rotate the wheel spindle by hand in the correct direction, if it is smooth the bearings might need adjustment. If rough you will need bearings which could be expensive.

The bearings in the spindle seem OK. The bearings in the motor may be another thing all together.

I'm ashamed to admit it but the front to back tilt in the table was due to the front seal under the table being bent. I puled the table and saddle again this morning to find that out. I've got a good bit more work to do to get this thing operational, it's not been maintained in a long time. A general cleaning and getting the oiling system working again helped immensely.

More leveling and testing today, hopefully any further questions won't be as trivial but I was at my wits end yesterday.

Thanks all!
