Guys awhile back I purchase a used eagle rock knurling tool 0-2 1/8 with acouple of wheels.I don't know nothing about wheel selection so I went to their website to try and collect some information on the wheels, still lost(help)http://specialtytooling.eaglerockon...s/series-e-no-k5-e-knurls-3-4-x-3-8-x-1-4-?.I don't what all this means so could someone point me in the right direction to some reading material that explains what is what,or a link or a Utube? The wheels that came with the tool are the cross stitch type but its about like fine sandpaper. What I want is more on the coarse side than smooth.Ok my first project will have a diameter of 3/4 " I want the cross stitch and I also want the straight cut wheels for knurling the shaft of a bolt that I cut the head off so that I can knurl the end to rough it up then press it into some knobs that I am trying to make. Thanks guys for the help----kroll

When you look at the chart, the columns "Diameter", "Width", and "Bore" all refer to the size of the knurling wheel itself. Following that is the "Pitch" column, it refers to the number of lines per inch that the wheel will produce. The "Profile" column is related to this graphic showing you what the wheels look like:

If you want to do a staight knurl, like on the end of your bolt you would use a pair of the "AA" profile wheels in whatever pitch you wanted. To do a cross-hatch or diamond knurl you need to use one "BL" 30° and one "BR" 30° wheel. The "GE" and "GV" wheels are for use when you have a single wheel push/pressure type of knurler.

Hope that helps,

-Ron

Thank you ScrapMetal,now have a better understanding.kroll

I use a larger version of your tool fairly often in a NC lathe. The instructions reccomend advancing the knurls onto the work rapidly, they are not kidding.
I start an inch away in X and feed straight in at .040-.060" per rev. to X 0 then feed in Z at .008-.010 IPR using 2 coolant nozzles, one for each knurl.
The last part was 1" 304 SS at 350 RPM's, the first one double tracked, I doubled the depth and the second one came out fine.

If not infed fast enough it will often double track, a small depth of knurl will also cause double tracking so don't be shy.

Now I know alittle more about wheel selection, but where to purchase them?I went to Eagle Rock website, and it gives a phone number to call.Where does the membership here buys?Thanks-----kroll

One thing to remember about knurling is that with the common diametral pitch knurls is that the OD size should be held to the common fractional sizes; for decimal sizes it is better to use circular pitch knurls --- or is it the other way around? That is the trouble with getting older, I can't remember what I can't remember. Using the wrong type can cause double tracking, as well as not starting with the right size; lots of feed pressure usually succeeds in getting good results, and to achieve that initial pressure, I start with the knurls perhaps only half width on the part at the start, this allows for more pressure to be exerted at the critical starting of the knurling operation. The scissors type holder are wonderful, especially on machines that are frail, as they take most of the pressure off the cross slide and carriage.

Thanks benmychree for responding,I have been reading the material in the link that cavebob and others posted and I remember reading something what you are talking about diametral/circular.I will have to go back and read it again, again, again.I have such a short memory---kroll
