E-35 Collets

Hi Guys,

I have an E-35 set of collets for my lathe. I also use them occasionally on my milling machine using
an R-8 collet holder. I was too lazy to change out the collet holder today so I chucked up a 3/4"
end mill to do some milling of mild steel.

The question is this: Does an E-35 collet have enough holding power for heavy machining using large end mills?
If I were to install the end mill in an R-8 end mill holder, it has a set screw that bottoms out in a flat on the
end mill. This seems much more secure to me.

I'm afraid to take more than 10-15 thousands with the collet holder holding the end mill.

Hmmm, never heard of an ER-35. Did you mean ER-32?

Anyway, I think you already answered your own question. The end mill holder with the set screw is more secure. The set screw is a hard stop while collets just squeeze. However, there are lots and lots of folks that use end mills in collets. Obviously the bigger the end mill, the bigger the cut, the bigger the chance for problems.
