Hello all, I just received and am setting up a PM1340GT. It's primary function is going to be gunsmithing. I bought a collet closer, I'm wondering why or why not I wouldn't drill the piece that slips over the Spindle and use it as a spider. I would like to avoid having to switch back and forth from the collet closer and a spider. I realize I'll have to modify the gear cover but is there any reason I can't do what I'm thinking? I would probably want to beef up the set screws that hold it onto the spindle, but other than that I can see no reason not to do it. I guess what scares me is running a tap into a piece that thick. I've run taps using the mill on thinner material but this scares me a little bit. Has anyone else done this to their collet closer?

Maybe drill into your part some so you don't have so many threads to cut. Otherwise take your time cutting the threads and be patient.
