Hi. I bought a DRO for my Zay7045 clone milling machine. I have to mount the X-scale on the back of the table.
The table is 800 mm with about 500mm travel. Can I mount the sensor any suitable place or does it have to be in the center of the scale. The reason am asking, is that if I
mount it slightly off center I will not have to modify the rubber cover that protect the saddle ways. Also, I can then more easily drill into the saddle to mount the sensor. The scale is the whole length of the table, so the sensor should have full access to any position the table is in. I think can I mount it anywhere but would like any opinions from you guys.

Thanks Chris

The sensor can be anywhere along the along the scale as it doesn't impede travel.

When choosing a mounting site, I check to see that at the extremes of table travel there is still some clearance at the end of the scale. If the usable scale length is close to the mechanical travel of the table, you would want the sensor be located near the center of the scale but if the scale length exceeds the mechanical travel, you can offset the sensor by the amount of excess.

If mounting the sensor at the middle of the table presents problems, you could offset the scale mount to obtain clearance.

@ RJSakowski, Thank You. Much appreciated. That is why I chose a 700mm scale. Unfortunately, the 700mm size offered is the usable measurable size. That makes it about 850mm in length and now extends about an inch on both sides of the table. Maybe this fact will make it even easier to mount as I can now make two brackets to fit the side of the table.
