I just bought a 14N Jacobs from MSC this week just out of curiosity's sake . I have 14Ns from Hartford , Made in the USA Jacobs and now this . I wanted to discuss these chucks with Darkzero to rate the differences in quality if any other than the etched service kit # and branding . I hope he can steer me in a direction to check these chucks for differences other than run-out .
There are a bunch of used Jacobs Super Chucks on ebay, many of which are beat to hell. You are looking for one in good shape that has "Hartford" stamped on the snout. This one is in good shape for a decent price and is the type you're looking for.
Edit: I should explain that the ones with Hartford on the lower body are for sure made in the US and are of better quality. The more contemporary ones are made in China.
I never use a drill Chuck on my mill/drill. Eats up way too much Z causing all kinda probs with having to change height in the middle of a process which can get me in trouble and lose my register. I was reading Machine Shop Trade Secrets and I had half the solution. I bought a set of screw length drill bits and big set of R8 collets. But his solution was even better to use the screw length drill bits and turn the shanks down to the nearest popular size of your end mill collets. Totally eliminating have to swap a Chuck in and out. Wish I would have thought of that!
In the mill it is PIA holding bit, spanner and shaft, especially at first. It is starting to loosen now so I hand tighten only 90% of the time. Have same version for lathe (MT3) and have only ever hand tightened it. Works great.
