I saw how pricy the classes are and when I get a job I will try to save up some money to go to one but for now i want to learn the bare minimum about it and book recommendations are also helpful and any thing that would help such as the tool shape is helpful and videos to.

Buy some equipment and watch some u tube videos. You can get a Sandvik scraper and a small surface plate pretty cheap. Then buy a cast iron right angle plate to practice on. The tough thing is figuring out how to grind the scraper blade.

I can afford a blade but the whole tool for over 100 is insane for a 12 year old who is broke after buying more tools but i do have 1 inch square carbide inserts and a dremel with diamond bits but i can pick up a green stone if needed

Hi Braden,

I fully appreciate this isn't what you really want to hear but I've said it to folks on this fourm who are six times your age. Patience is your friend here.

That being said, being in Pennsylvania your chances of finding a mentor are pretty good. Have you tried posting on the forum and explaining what you want to learn to see if there's anyone near you who can help?

You're about the same age I was when I started working at my local go-kart shop, something which led me on a lifelong path of learning and actually made me a few bucks too. You have youth and enthusiasm in your favor, things many of us would gladly give up considerable treasure to have again.

If you're really interested in learning why not reach out to @Richard King 2 and ask him what you might be able to do to EARN a space in an upcoming class. Show your willingness to be helpful and you might find another forum member who would be willing to SPONSOR your tuition. Show off your shop space and some of the projects you're working on, people here are ready to help anyone who wants to learn.

There are many paths to get where you're going, don't imagine you know all of them when you are just starting out....

What do you mean by earn a spot or get a sponsor I don’t understand but I Don’t understand much at all. And that is the first time someone said that patience is your friend all I’ve heard was that you need time and money.

Sometimes educational opportunities are afforded by scholarship, part or all of the tuition and fees are covered either by the organization offering the program or another organization or individual that believes the student is worthy regardless of financial ability. You will want to start learning about scholarships now because it's a great way to help pay for college and if you start now you have a much better chance of winning one when you are ready. I don't know if Richard King has ever offered one for his classes but it doesn't hurt to ask, normally if one is offered you have to fill out an applications that shows why you should be given the opportunity.

Sponsors are different as they are individuals or businesses that believe in you and are willing to pay part or all of your expenses. Racing drivers often have sponsors who advertise on the side of their cars.

Mentors are people who have experience in an area you are interested in that are willing to spend time with you to help achieve your goals. Having a good mentor is a great way to learn about obstacles and opportunities in any field. The section on this forum I linked to is one place you can go to seek a mentor.
