This is a replacement [pre-programmed] ESP32 DevKitC module for the TDK-40T DIY DRO kit. This is the same module and firmware that ships with the kit.

Free firmware has always been free for non-commercial use, so that is not new. The new part is that it's now on the same v3 code base, so better BlueTooth library, better error rejection on scale inputs, faster and longer burst refresh rate, and two-way communications (which makes it compatible with some new features that are coming in the next few months).

Yes, you are interpreting this correctly. I got a lot of flack from the DIY crowd about being locked out of the Plus version. Several people said that they would be happy to pay for it, but can't afford a fully-build adapter. This is my way to get some empirical data on whether or not this is true
