If this is the wrong spot for this post please move.

I have a 1942 Hendey 12 X 30 Gearhead lathe. My everyday driver. I just love Hendey stuff. This is a very feature rich machine but it seems to have been made without any consideration to indexing the spindle for dividing operations. Does anyone have any information that might apply specifically to this lathe. In many sites, on smaller lathes people use a detent pawl on a gear. This arrangement would be quite awkward on this machine as all gearing is under cast iron cover. The only gear that can be seen is a secondary gear driven by the spindle. There is no way to see the actual spindle. Well if anyone has any ideas I would love to hear them.
BTW I am wanting to scribe index marks on a dial.

Thanks

I'm not very familiar with the Hendey lathes, but most lathes have an opening on the left end of the spindle to allow long stock to pass thru. Is that not true with your lathe?

If it does have the opening it's a simple matter of making an expanding mandrel or arbor (various designs) to mount a gear.......or spider......or????

Maybe a picture of your lathe would help?

WELL DUH!!!!!! Why the hell didn't I think of that. That's why being able to throw a question out here is so nice. Sometimes the obvious is right in front of your nose. You wouldn't believe some of the hair brained contraptions that have been going on in my head to get this done.
I cant thank you enough for the help Stevecmo.

Best Regards

Glad I could help.

The older I get the obvious becomes more elusive!:))
