As you folks likely know these two step cast zinc pulleys are hard to find and rather expensive when you do find them.
I'd like to make a new one for my 12x36 underdrive Craftsman and was wondering if any of you had the dimensions or a print of this pulley?
It kind of angers me that these are so hard to find and they are such cheaply made pieces of junk to boot.
The other alternative I've been thinking of is buying a 3 phase motor and a VFD and doing away with the step pulley altogether.
This is what have in mind.

Shoot, for $180, I'd just forego the pulley and install that motor and VFD. That's a great price. Especially if your not sentimental about keeping things original and you just want something that works well. I'd do it in a heart beat. :)) I don't think it'd be worth my time to make the pulley, but, that's just me.

I agree with Marcel. I have a Logan lathe that also utilized a two step pulley on the motor, however I only have a single sized pulley on mine, that is the way I got it. So, I've got a total of six speeds, which I can usually make work, but variable speed would be the cat's meow. I also hunted for a two step pulley for a while, trying to find one at a decent / reasonable price, with no luck. I gave serious consideration to making my own pulley also, but have settled on changing out the motor with a three phase unit and a VFD. It will be way more bang for the buck!

hey, I got an extra 3/4 hp three phase you can have for $10 but you gotta come and get it in maple.... about 40 miles from you.

I also have a VFD on my lathe with a half horse motor, and only change the flat belt to get me in the right speed range. I have never run it in back gear, but it is there if I need it for some reason.
You won't regret the purchase.

Senna (or anyone else),

If you decide that you want to make an original size aluminum 2-step motor pulley, there is a decent drawing in the Atlas_Craftsman Files section on Yahoo. I can't recall whether I ever uploaded it here or not (and I still have nearly another 1000 files to go through and relocate before I'll know). Or I can email it.

Thanks guys for all the help!

The VFD/motor package is very tempting and I may go that way but the link to the 2 step pulley drawing provided by Robert D. is exactly what I wanted to see.
Thanks again.
