Deadly Grinding Wheels

Didn't say what kind of grinder. Blanchard? Bench? OD? Either way, he could have been turned away to his toolbox, a workbench, a cart full of parts, an inspection table. If is was a hand operated grinder, who knows? He could have powered it up, and while spinning up, he turned to pick up a part. Sad. Can't be too careful. Maybe he was careful. All accidents can't be predicted.

The California Division of Occupational Safety and Health says the wheel shattered and sent metal pieces flying. The agency is now investigating whether the grinder had proper guards and was properly maintained and what training, if any, Munoz-Garcia had received to use it.

Couldn't even imagine a grinder tossing metal hard enough for a ricochet fatality. I wonder what they call a grinder?

I would bet surface grinder, they can get nasty pretty quick, plus they can toss everything thats on the table..

he might have seen a crash coming and turned his head to take cover and a block or part hit him.. I seen a guy grinding a bunch of hardened washers one time, he brought the wheel down, backed it off, started the table and accidentally bumped the z axis handle and it spit all 16 washers out the window, all the washers went out the same hole and into the parking lot.

All stationary grinders deserve a lot of respect. That page needs a better translation. The best was the recommendation to place a piece of paper larger than the room under the part. That might be pretty tough.

I cant believe osha doesnt make manufacturers fully enclose surface grinders..
