So I just bought a Shar's MT6 dead center from Amazon. I measured before I bought and the large end of the headstock is ~ 2.220". According to this chart https://solutions.travers.com/metalworking-machining/how-to-determine-your-machines-taper-size I have a MT6 taper, right?

Does this stick out look right to you guys?

When you use a center in the headstock there must be some way to drive the lathe dog that attaches to the work piece. So some sort of chuck or faceplate is normally taking up some of that distance. But even with a chuck mounted, this one seems to be a bit long.

Do you know for sure what type of taper you have? It could be something other than Morse
What brand/model of lathe is it? The right way to do this is to start with the lathe documentation and go from there

You should measure the large opening on your tailstock, and fit it to the large dimension. Since every Morse taper has a different angle, this center will not work at all.

Since it fits in the taper, your large end is bigger than 2", but MT5 is at its largest at 1.75"... It is possible that this Amazon item is simply wrong in every way, but measure using snap gauges at the mouth, and at 4" in and calculate the inches per inch of the taper. With those 3 measurements you can fit it to the chart.

I'm worried that you have a B&S #9 or #10 (it has been many hears that I've hat to fit a B&S taper, so I cannot remember)

So I have a MT5 for another lathe and it will slide clean through the headstock without even touching!

There is a shoulder 2.959” deep in the spindle nose and it measures 2.066". There is a taper of some kind there.

The MT6 seats approx 1.900” deep as seen here.

My lathe has a "L0" spindle.
I have not found anything to fit the internal taper.
My parts manual says the angle is that of a MT6.
MT6 is too large and MT5 is too small.
I have a growing accumulation of "don't fit" dead centers.

I am still looking - maybe I will make one.

measure your taper and see if it can be found on this chart:

Is this on the Clausing-Colchester 15x48? If I’m reading the manual right it says the spindle taper is MT-4 in bushing.

@francist : You are correct the book says No 4 Morse taper but your picture is not the right manual.

This is a Clausing-Colchester 15x48 and the manual says "Taper in Spindle Nose Bush ... ... No 4 Morse" There is no @#$%^@#$ way that is a no 4!
Is there supposed to be an adapter that goes inside the nose? Or does someone make a 'Short' taper?

There is nothing on your list @Dabbler that has a taper length of ~2.00". The B&S #14 is the closest but has a length of 8.25"! It might seat a little deeper but it's going to stick out the same length!
