I picked up this Dalton 7" with a box of tools. then a week after I got this i picked up a South Bend Heavy 10 for free. I don't really need 2 lathes so I am debating which one to keep. I am leaning toward keeping the SB. This Dalton is pretty nice, it still needs some gears though. The serial number is 6194

Everyone needs two lathes; some just haven't yet come to that realization. ;>)

Don,

Do you still have the Dalton? They are a great machine, high end and very well built in their day. Likely less wear on the ways than your SB10.... If you look on the end of the ways, of the Dalton, you will see a Lot number stamped on the horizontal edge. You will need to know which lot number it is to make sense of the SN. Each “lot” of Dalton Lathes, had their own separate set of serial numbers.

Also, by chance, you mentioned also acquiring a box of tooling. Any chance you might have a spare backing plate for a chuck? I have a Dalton and need a backing plate for another chuck. Can’t find one anywhere.

Thanks much,
Glenn Brooks
