I have a 12" Taper lock chuck and 16" face plate. Is it possible to make an adapter to change to a D1-8 mount?
Any input is appreciated.
Thanks

That looks like a Long Taper (type L) spindle mount, does the face plate have threads on the outside of the taper bore and the spindle have a captured nut?
As seen here http://www.victornet.com/reference/Lathe_Chuck.html
Is it possible to mill off the extended taper section on your current 4J, then machine and bolt on a D1-8 backing plate. Could save you several hundred dollars, relative to buying a new 4J with a D1-8 direct mount. The face plates are usually inexpensive, so probably just buy a direct mount. A word of caution on the cheaper 4J independent generic/cheaper Chinese chucks, they tend to have a lot of grit and in my experience are poorly balanced. I had an 8" that I couldn't get past a little over 300 RPM because the castings where so uneven (poorly balanced). The Shar's 4J is pretty inexpensive, but for low speed work should be ok. You would probably do better to try to sell you current chucks if in decent condition.

Thanks Mksj, and Wreck Wreck.
I am going to just look for a good used American madeD1-8 chuck and face plate. I will keep an eye on craigslist and kijiji . It is a bit over my skill level to start machining something that potentially could hold several hundred pounds on a face plate that I jury rigged because I am a cheap skate.

Wish I was a little closer to you. I have a 21" 4-jaw steel body chuck that has a D1-8" back. The chuck shows very little use. I bought it with the intentions of mounting a L-1 backplate to it so I could use it on my 20" L & S lathe. Found a 15" chuck instead. Shipping would be a killer to get it up to Canada!
I have machined off a L-1 to adapt a D1-6 back plate to a chuck before. Worked out ok. I can see it being difficult if you don't have a second lathe handy to do the machining with.
I have the D1-8 mounting part of a 3 jaw chuck. Plan on machining it flat to mount an 8inch 4 jaw when I find one at a reasonable price. The 14 inch 4 jaw I have now only closes to 1 inch
