Hey folks this might be a stupid question and I'm not sure if I'm posting in the right place or not.I am very new to metal working but I am learning a lot.I was wondering if you have a machine that has a d1-5 chuck on it can you put a d1-4 chuck on it later, because i don't have a clue about the chucks. thanks..

Most chucks have chuck backs mounted to them -which are intermediate plate/adapters that on one side, connect to the spindle and to the chuck on the other. D1-5 can handle a larger chuck. There are a few rare chucks that have the D1-N receptacle milled into them but, they're in a price range out of most folks reach. The advantage to a back-less chuck is a savings of about 1.5 inches of distance between the chuck face and end of bed. For all practical purposes, D1-4 in a home and/or light industrial setting is perfectly fine. Most folks have 6 and 8" chucks which is easily handled by D1-4. FYI: 10" chucks weigh about 90lbs.

So yes, if you have the standard type of chuck, you can switch the backs and put whatever mount you want on it.

If I understand your question correctly, the lathe spindle is a D1-4, and has a chuck mounted on it. The D1 is the style of mount, and 4 indicates the size, although I don't believe there is any feature on that mount that actually is 4". So, to answer the question, D1-4 and D1-5 are not interchangeable. Here's a chart showing the basic dimensions for different types of chuck mount:

Now if you are wanting simply to mount a larger chuck, then that is probably possible, but will still require a back plate that matches your lathe spindle, in this case, D1-4. You can buy a blank D1-4 back plate and machine it to fit a different chuck. But be careful trying to go too large on the chuck. If it's too large, you can't open the jaws very far before they hit the ways or cross-slide. There is a balance there.

So -- the answer to you question is - yes and no - No in that you cant take an existing D1-5 chuck off, say, one machine and take it over to another with D1-4 spindle and it will fit. Yes in that you can take a D1-5 chuck and remove the back plate and replace it with one in D1-4 configuration. You can buy the back plate from many suppliers, it will (usually) require drilling the mounting holes to match your existing chuck.

Thanks for the quick response I was looking to purchase a machine that comes with a d1-5 chuck and I just was wanting to know if I was going to be stuck purchasing only d1-5 chucks.but it looks like from what you guys are saying is that if I wanted to put a d1-4 on it later that i could . thanks

Really there's no such thing as a D1-4 chuck, unless you happen to find a direct mount one. It you had a direct mount D1-4 chuck you CANNOT mount it to a D1-5 spindle.

That's the spindle on the lathe and the back plate that fits it. Anything other than a direct mount chuck has a generic plain back.

You buy whatever adapter you need to mount the plain back chuck to the spindle your lathe happens to have.

You CAN buy a chuck that has a D1-4 adapter plate and remove it. This will leave you with a plain back chuck. You will just have to buy the
correct adapter plate for your lathe spindle.
