I put an ad in Kijiji looking for scrap aluminum and nylon. Fellow responded stating that he had a bunch of huge gears 40lbs each (6” thick at the hub) and made of nylon6. $3 per gear. So I picked some up. I’m going to try and cut one up with either my Delta bandsaw or 5x6 horizontal. Suggestions for most effective blade?

also will be picking up about 200lbs of aluminum plates and blocks later today, kid is selling metal supply from hobby machinist estate. 50c per pound.

Just doing a quick poke around I’m seeing Nylon 6 as being pretty much the same composition as Nylon 6/6 which I have used in the past. Not that big, but it did cut fine on my regular wood cutting bandsaw with something like a skip or raker 6 TPI blade. I seem to recall the finer tooth patterns (say 18 TPI) don’t work as nicely and just tend to skate in the cut.

That is unusual- 40 lb nylon sprockets
Who would need such a thing? Military?

Poke, Sounds like you got a good price on those sprockets. You should get a lot of material out of them.
Al.

I would hold off cutting them up until you have a specific need, Murphy says that whatever sizes you cut will just a hair to small for your next need.

You want a very coarse tooth while still keeping at least 3 teeth engaged, and you need to run a slower speed to avoid melting the plastic.

Good advice, I was thinking the same thing. I’m going to order a blade with fewer teeth, so it will be waiting when I need it.
