Howdy all,

My experience with machine tools is non-existant. I don't have much I can contribute. I am here to learn what I can. At the same time, I feel like I should contribute to the general knowledge base as much as I can.

I spend a lot of time with Google Books. From their digitized collection of old magazines and books I have gathered a small treasure trove of ideas that I would have never come up with on my own. Here is one:

This is of course limited to slotting a hub if you have a keyed shaft or vise versa. But it is a solution to a problem that otherwise would require an arbor press, a shaper, slotter, or mill. None of which I have in my shop. But I do have a grinder and a hammer. ;)

Thank you, Google.

I searched for but did not find a similar thread. There were several threads concerning slotting. But none that I saw offered a method to cut a slot by hand.

I like that. Please keep these articles coming. It will be good not to lose some of the old ingenuity.

That aside, this forum is as good as it is because of the questions. Those are the number one contribution any of us can make. Please keep those coming, too.
