I was wondering if anyone has cut a double end mill in half. The larger ones in my set do not fit in my R8,s
any ideas on how to cut them would be appreciated
Thanks
Ray

I don't cut them but put them in an endmill holder. they generally have room for a double ended end mill, and are more secure to boot.

I've never cut an endmill bit but when I need to make a very small HSS bit for a boring bar, I use a rotary grinding cutoff wheel being careful not to over heat it. All typical safety considerations should be observed.

I've cut a gazillion of em --- well, I have cut quite a few...

For some reason I can find double ended EM's at really great bargains, or free, and using them in collets can often be a problem. I cut (grind?) them in half with one of our Harbor Frts air die grinder using a 3" thin cut-off wheel. I ran up on some double ended EMs in big sizes - 7/8-15/16- 1" and they wouldnt come close to being useable in my ER40 collets, so, I sliced them in half...

Another method is to use one of the 4 1/2" angle (HF again) and one of the 5" cut-off blades for them.

This method is by far the easiest method for the home shopper - cheap, fast, and no damage to the EM.
