Hello folks,

I'm not necessarily hung on this machine but I am trying to establish some baseline expectations to help me make a smart decision.
In fact, I'm leaning towards purchasing new, but if the right used machine comes along I may be interested. Example:

I haven't seen it in person. spoke to the seller; it has been stored unused in a working garage for a few years. There is a new motor included but it needs to be wired up. Supposedly comes from a non-production (homeowner) environment. Comes with just basic tooling, a set of what appears to be change gears, and a tailstock chuck, nothing else. Seller will go $700.

Whaddya think...worthy? Or not?

Thanks.

They are asking $750, but $700 seems reasonable. Yours looks to be a newer model. I'd check to see if the motor works and that it's the right RPM and an appropriate HP rating. The grease/oil might be hardened, but that can be fixed easily. Check out the ways and see what the wear is like. Does it come with any other chuck? What is the basic tooling it comes with?

Is this the later Atlas/Sears commercial 12” ?
You better go look at it, I’m no expert, but I think these are pretty good machines.

$700?

Just go with cash and load it up....

1/2hp is kinda weak for a lathe of this size, but motors are easily sourced and retrofitted.
I would suggest at bare minimum 3/4hp, 1hp or 1.5 hp would be better..
A NEMA 1750 nominal rpm 56 frame motor is a drop in without having to change pulleys as the 56 frame has a 5/8” o.d. Shaft with a 3/16” keyway. (The exception is the 56HZ frame has a 7/8” shaft , 1/4” keyway )

The lathe has a KDK toolpost which is a bonus

Al in all, for $700-i’d be on my way to get it
