I looking to purchase some collets but which type.
My mill has an R8 spindle.
Should I go with the standard round R8 collet
Whats the difference between the ER32 and ER25 collets?

The different numbers for ER collets indicates something to do with the size range. The 32 would be a bigger OD collet and allow for a larger OD piece to be held on the high side of the range.

ER collets have a larger "collapse" meaning they have a range of holding that is greater than most other collets. 0.04" or a little over 1/32" So you don't need to buy 1/64" increments and it can stand a little sloppier stock than a 5C which needs has a hair under 1/64" collapse.

If you are getting collets for toolholding (IE, end mills, etc), go for the R8 collets, or grab some R8 end mill holders. You may also want to grab an R8-JTxx adapter to fit your drill chuck if you don't already have one.

Another option is to get an R8-ER collet chuck and a set of ER collets. As I understand it, some people prefer this arrangement to R8 collets/toolholders because you don't have to loosen the drawbar to change a tool, you just loosen the collet nut. Of course, this is a bit more expensive.

Thanks for info. I already have a complete set of R8 end mill holder from 1/4 to 1".
I just thought it would be a good idea to have some R8 collets, since they extend less out of the spindle and would add some rigidity.
I think I'll get some R8's their fairly cheap, and wait for the ER type.

Aliva,
Here is a good Page (link here) outlining the differences basically its a size range thing.
Example My lathe has a max spindle hole of just over .75. So my best Er setup would be the er32 series.
since its max collet side is .75. They all go down to near 0.0 (drill able to your own sizes.)

Best! Sam
