As if I don't have enough projects already:drool:, I'm dreaming about getting a X2...more specifically a LMS hi-torque mini-mill, and doing a basic CNC conversion. Probably would be running small model airplane parts on it or just "playin with chips" Anybody have or used one? Looks like about $1500 ish might build one and I already have a fair amount of R8 tooling. Todd

how about a bridgeport or bridgeport clone with ballscrews and convert it?

Well, a few reasons One is the cost...from what it seems like you can build one of these x2 machines for about $15-1700 all new, the used Bridgeports that have DRO or CNC around here are going for 3-5k...bare ones about $2800 give or take. To convert would take much larger steppers, power supply etc. possible 3-phase conversion, restoration, transportation, wiring, etc.
I'm only gonna be doing small parts, mostly aluminum or plastic, balsa etc I'm pretty sure. Biggest reason is what I want is something I can play with in the basement during the Minnesota winters, and my layout would never allow a Bridgie in without basically tearing half the house down. Also even if it werent in the basement my Smithy 1324 is taking up all the room available. I already have to shelve and stack/clean every night before the wife gets home so she can pull her car in and keep her attitude in check.:) Plus then I'd have to add a extra pc cause I'm not gonna lose the one in my basement hobby room. I know a lot of folks feel a Bridgeport is the only way to go, but It just would'nt fit this situation well. Thanks for the suggestion though! Todd
