Depends on what materials you are working with, but it must fit the profile of the work also. I have seen people put 1/4" 2 flute end mills in a router and made good parts. Lots of variables though. How small are the features you are cutting? Do you have cutter comp built into the control?

here's the Sears Model number 26366.
they're 1/4" bits.
i'm going to use that wax/plastic blend
for the forseeable futures.
don't know about that tool comp thing.
i'm not the 'machine operator'.:)
what's a basic set of milling bits?

I teach on a shopbot CNC router the PRSAlfa 48*48. The spindle runs at 18000 so its a little faster and more ridged than using a hand router as the spindle, but nothing wrong with a hand router set up. I only use solid carbide tooling. We order from http://centuriontools.com/ Good pricing and service. We have also had good experiences with http://keenedgeatl.com/. They sell Onsrude, Whiteside and Amana tools cheaper than going directly to the company. The carbide tipped cutters like you pictures work just fine (I don't let students use them because they are easier to make mistakes with) Make sure your rated RPMs match your spindle speed and keep your chip loads in range and you should have no problems. Don't use the ones with guide bearings on them with your CNC you can ended up trashing your spindle if your measurements are off.
