i've walked by mills in machine shops that have digital readout boxes on them.
it looks like X,Y & Z.then they have 3 or 4 buttons on them.
how CNC controlled are those?
is that just for one pass?
do they enter info right at that little box or
is it just readout?

Sounds to me like a manual mill with a DRO (Digital Read Out) The x,y & z are the 3 axis the mill moves in and the read outs show you exactly how much you're moving things. It allows you to more acurately mill in less time from what I understand but I've never used anything with a DRO.:)

thanks, i've always wondered about that.

do they call the ones with built on CNC and little screens controllers?
i keep hearing the phrase 'controller' and
i think sometimes they mean the old built in ones and
sometimes they mean controller software.
'pass the G-code to the controller'
