Click in a Starrett 216

I bought a Starrett 216/0-1" on the Bay. It has a slight hesitation and a "click" each time the spindle rotates, every .025. I assume it's a chip on a gear or something like that.

Starrett wants about $100 for a rebuild of the tool. Added to the $55 I paid, that's mighty close to a new one!

Is this something I can do? Or, can one of you do it for less than Starrett wants? Or, should I learn to live with it?

I looked there. Their website says:

DO NOT SEND the following brands or manufacturers:

dial calipers of any length
Helios calipers and height gages
Kanon calipers and height gages
Peacock indicators, bore gages, etc.
NSK calipers
Fowler and Sylvac products
Teclock gages of any kind
Anything made in China.
SPI gages made in India (such as hole mikes)
S-T (Scherr-Tumico)
Starrett gages of any kind (emphasis mine)

I wonder why Starrett made their do-not-send list?
You can try and fix it yourself if you've got the wrench and a gage to check it afterwards. Disassembly is pretty straightforward. Maybe someone "cleaned" it in the past and got a piece lint inside while reassembling. Might be worth taking apart, wiping down and putting back together to see if there is any difference.
