My craftsman lathe came with a 5" chuck. Looking to upgrade bigger. Is there any advantage to having more than one size? My thoughts are that going to an 8" or 10" should do everything I need to do

are you talking upgrading the size of the lathe or just getting a larger chuck for your craftsman lathe? without knowing the model of your lathe determines the maximum size of chuck that will fit your lathe.

It's the 101.07403 12". Like I said, it came with a 5" chuck which is a bit small for what I want to do

I have a 5" 3 jaw, 6" 4 jaw, 8" 4 jaw and an ER32 collet chuck that screws directly onto the spindle. I rarely use the 8" at all. I really don't like that much metal swinging around unless it's needed. The 3 jaw and the collet chuck get the most use. 10F Atlas

then I would keep an eye out for the largest size you would like, but they are not inexpensive unless you can find a bargain.

I would say that there is an advantage of keeping your 5" even if you get an 8" for needed projects, unless all your projects require a large chuck.

If you really need an 8", I'd look for an independent four jaw with integral plate. they are the lightest. I'd keep the 5" if that chuck is good. I have a 5.5 ( 11 ) lathe with a stout headstock and still run a 6" chuck as much as possible. A set tru scroll chuck is fairly heavy and less is more when swinging weight on a spindle. I don't know the build but suspect it isn't like a 10EE or even my 1024. I have on old Union combo 6" I got for $100 and just use the outside jaws to avoid the 8" and my go to is a 6 jaw set tru 6". 10" wouldn't even be on my list. Dave
