Chesterman No. 369 48" Vernier Height Gauge In Box - $200 (concord / pleasant hill / martinez, CA)

48”!? I’d be concerned I’d hit a rafter trying to use that silly thing. Wonder why they never show the bottom of the base? That’s where the critical damage is from past experience.

I think you answered your own question.

Seems like one this tall would need a larger base. Wonder if it can stand on its own. Even a 24" is hard to keep vertical when doing layout.

Damage to the base is not always critical; re-lap and re-calibrate. After all, it was a casting to start with.
If a 1000 miles closer it would be mine; except it is sadly NOT in $200 condition.

After redoing a couple of height gauge bases I’m very leery. I have no idea what surface they were using them on but they were both boat shaped. An old Starrett and a B&S. And they HARD, not soft so it took a lot to get them flat again. My 14” Starrett is kinda overkill for what I do. 48”? For what?

Absolutely correct; what is possible and what is beyond reason overlap. My comments are usually directed to the masses; while responding to one's dilemma. The base can be cured, but when the vernier or scale are degraded, it's not suitable any longer. When you need 40 to 48" that's the ticket, the 3-1/2 feet underneath.
