Friction can be pretty predicable and easily adjusted for tension a variety of ways. This is pretty low budget and can be made from scrap and that's always good thing.

I made a hydraulic unit for cheap with an old gas strut off the back window of my pickup shell. All it cost was some tubing, a small T-valve and a couple of o-rings for a tail plug I made out of scrap. Fully adjustable and dependable.
