In seeking at least a partial set of change gears for this machine I have come across both the 'A' & non 'A' gears. My lathe has the 'A' gears on it. I understand that the 'non-A' gears have a narrower hub width than the A type. My question- is there any reason not to use the 'non-A' gears if I make spacers to match the hub width of the A gears where needed ? Thanks for any input on this....

Well, I should have read the above before replying to your post in the S/N thread. So just disregard my A versus Non-A question.

To answer your question, if you were to come across a set of Non-A gears quite cheap and if you have the means to cut the double keyways in the 1/16" thick spacers, they will work OK. However, the Non-A gears are much rarer on average and I would expect, if the seller actually knows anything (often they are clueless), that the price would be higher. Plus if it were my lathe, I would acquire the original gears. But that's just the way that I am.
