I have a Atlas 12" lathe. The carriage wheel seems to have a lot of play, like may a little more then 1/8th of a turn. Is there a way to adjust this? As you can tell I am new to this. I have the manual but there does not seem to be any guidance there. Thanks.

That play is just gear lash and doesn't affect the machine. Most lathes I have run have about that much.

Backlash in the carriage handwheel, as previously stated, is common. However, 1/8th turn may be on the high side. There are several sources. Counting the rack as one, there are four gears, two shafts and four unbushed holes involved. You might investigate and determine where the worst of the backlash is coming from. And then decide whether it is worth the time and expense to improve.

Hi. Have you checked that the set-screws of the traverse gearcase are tight? The bolt holes in the flanges of the gearcase are elongated so that the position of the small diameter gear that mates with the bed-rack can be adjusted and excessive backlash eliminated. The gearcase is also pinned in place, so it is worth checking that these pins are present and correct.
