Can't tell my left from my right!

Super newbie question.
What orientation is used to determine if an insert holder is left or right handed?
The only way this make sense to me is if I'm at the end of the spindle looking toward the tool post.
This is a left handed tool


And this is a right handed tool.

simply put, to me it either looks like a right or left hand extended to do the cutting
there are center cutting tools too

I would have thought there was some relationship to the cutting direction or something similar.
