Can you help me disassemble this headstock

This is an old Hardinge cataract lathe. The headstock spindle has about 1 eighth inch play left to right, as if it is missing a thrust bearing or washer or something. After removing the end caps I am stumped on how to remove the spindle, because there are some strange castle nut like things that I need to remove and I don't know how

First of all I want to say I have never worked on a machine that old, but have repaired Hardinges and other machines for over 40 yrs.

I see where someone had tightened it by hammering on those slots. Hardinge must of had a spanner wrench that slide into 2 of them at the same time. If you can made one, if not I would get a piece of flat bar-stock into the slot and hit against it with with a punch to avoid ding up the slots. I would not use a slotted screw driver as you need somthing that will be solid. Many times there is a button head set screw holding them from turning, check all the way around. Be sure to squirt the treads with penetration oil check to be sure there isn't any burrs on the threads. If there are buy a thread file from MSC or another place and file the threads.

I found this picture on practical machinist. Does this look like a collet sort of arrangement? The incomplete ring with frequent slots makes me think it snugs up against the spindle as it is pressed inward. I can't tell, what do you think? I'll post the link since I can't do it on my iPad... Stay tuned
