Can I cut this scale?

This was purchased for a different purpose and I now want to use it for the quill travel of my Millrite mill, but it is too longscale.JPG.
Can I cut the stainless scale and maintain the proper operation of what is left?

does it have a zero button? If so, yes. I bought one of those cheaply on flea-bay to make a z-axis dro for my old mill-drill and had to cut off a couple of inches. The end brackets just unscrew, I cut the excess off with a hacksaw and then screwed that little black end piece back on.

Hi Tigtorch, I have cut these scales using a Dremel tool with a cut-off wheel. The capacitive cells that the head reads from to derive the position are contained in the strip that is affixed to the front of the scale. I have found drilling holes in them for remounting is best done with a carbide bit. I used a bit that was originally designed for drilling in tile or concrete. I put it on the diamond wheel to clean up the cutting edge, works very well.

+1 On what Jim said. I found mine wasn't going to cut with a hacksaw, and was surprized it was that hard. The dremel with cutoff wheel did the trick, and then I quickly discovered I wasn't going to drill into it unless I used a carbibe bit. Im sure they all arnt that hard, depends on manufacture I guess.
