I just got an old Buck 6" chuck and the adjusting screws do not protrude down far enough to touch the collar on the mounting plate. The adj screws are 7/8" long 1/2-20 setscrews with a hardened serrated tip. They just don't look right and like I say, they are too short. Is there supposed to be some sort of insert or shoulder on the screws to bear on the collar? See pic:

I think you need a piece of brass between the screw and where it makes contact.

I agree. If the set screw diameter is the same as the two set screws in the threaded collar on the left end of the Atlas 10/12 spindle, you can get some from Clausing.

You definitly don't want serrated tip set screws,i made a cushman chuck into an adjust tru and i ground the set screws flat on the end on the surface grinder. You may have to dog leg your set screws also, the hole may not be 1/2" 20 all the way through.

Thanks all. I made some brass "pills" that the adjusting screws can push on to locate the chuck. I suppose this is the way it was supposed to be and the brass cushions were missing. I got the chuck adjusted to .0004" TIR this afternoon. I love it.
