Brown and Sharpe 818 Micromaster Hydraulic Surface Grinder - $1,700 (concord / pleasant hill / martinez, CA)

Those are very nice grinders, and that is not a bad price at all if it is working. However, I would for sure want to see it run and see that everything works properly before buying it...

That is a great price if it was on the East coast. Normally anything like that would be double in price.

right up the road, but sounds like she's not working as intended(if at all)

If one would want to run this type of SG off of a VFD , is it possible and how hard would it be to do it ?

That is a relatively complicated machine. If you cannot put it through its paces, see what is right or wrong, and then be able to fix anything wrong with it, and have the time, knowledge, and extra funds to get it working correctly, then I would not purchase it. It also will take up considerable space, perhaps too much in smaller shops. And it will also be heavy to move. For the right person, and in good running condition, it will be wonderful.

Hey Bob , I still have the 618 Micromaster sitting in the garage but haven't hooked it up yet . I bought it running so I know it will run . I have 3 HP rated VFD sitting in the garage also . Just wondering how difficult a hookup it would be . I used to run a 15 hp RPC which was a pretty simple hook up but these VFDs scare me ! :big grin:

I have never worked on a 618, only saw one up close and operational once. It seems designed for work in a busy for profit shop, with lots of work needed to pay for having it. (Edit) We are looking at a 818 grinder, a much larger and beefy machine than a 618. (end edit) It also appears to be hell-for-stout. I am used to small hobby machinist shops, and I think there are probably better choices for that usage for most of us hobbyists. If somebody does nearly all surface grinding work, and plenty of it, or really needs the larger size capacity, then it might be really nice, even in a smaller shop.

Just my humble opinion, not backed with personal use of that machine or others that are similar size and heavy duty, just my 618 B&S SG...

I just went out and grabbed the VFD . I'm going to post a pic on another new thread and go from there to see if this is feasable . Thanks !
