Broken Cutter

To-day I dropped a 12mm long series slot drill on the floor. It snapped off where the cutting flutes end. Straight through (like it was cut with a grinder) . Any one else had something similar? The floor is concrete.

Yup. Some tooling is extremely brittle.

Can't tell how many times the rubberized mats around the machines have saved my ass.

I have seen tools break like that, and have also seen where you drop them and they do not break but they are then warped thus not cutting properly, or drilling proper holes. I hat it when you have not even gotten to use it yet and things happen to them.

I have had two drills break on me from dropping them. Always the expensive ones break.

Long drills are frequently a soft shank welded to a HS drill. If not done properly, the weld will be brittle. Fracture at the weld?
