Hi all- I recently got my first-ever lathe from an old back yard garage. It has a broken tooth on the larger gear (see px). Am I better of just replacing the gear or the whole assembly? If I replace just the gear, how do I remove it? Heating?

Not knowledgeable enough about 10L's to know if they ever changed the design of the back gear, but assuming not I'd just buy one on Ebay:

Replacing a broken tooth is absolutely possible for a hobbyist, but unless you have brazing equipment, a mill (or attachment for the lathe), a way to index it, and a gear cutter already on hand I don't think you'll beat the price of a good used one considering they seem to go for well under $100 shipped.

Good luck with the new machine!

Just one tooth? What about the spindle bull gear underneath the cover?

For the record, that particular gear is pressed on its shaft onto a woodrift key.

The spindle bull gear looks fine. One tooth broken off- is that insignificant (I'm very new to machining)?

You can still use the back gears while missing one tooth in a row. You'll hear a "clack, clack, clack" as the tooth vacancy goes over the smaller gear, but it is still quite usable.
