I was attempting to remove the gear that drives the forward and reverse gear on the end of the spindle, and broke the locknut inboard of the gear. The locknut is cast iron and I was going to order a ci bar to make a new one. My SWMBO works with a machinist and he suggested I make one out of brass. The work was pretty much straight forward but it was my first attempt at internal threading. I was removing the locknut to replace the fibre washer with a thrust bearing. I was very pleased with the results and the machinist asked me if it fit the first time and was impressed that it did.

Thanks Ed. I ordered a thrust bearing and when it came in, all I got was the bearing. I didn't know I had to order the races (which they call thrust washers) to go with the bearing.
