Are Boxford and South Bend the same? Why does a Boxford lathe have a South Bend gearbox on it?

Boxford is the English SB.
around WWII, SB's were copied by a few different companies for the war efforts in different countries

great deal for someone- i'm full or i'd snatch them up

I guess, but basket cases are pretty much a no go for me. The other red flag is the BP has had the ways ground and flaked......doesn’t regrind make the lead screws out of axis with the bearings? I thought the next things was turcite then scraping/flaking.

the top deck may have been ground, i would be curious if the ways were actually ground
Flaking is for oil retention, it can be used on ground surfaces- but usually on the surfaces you'll never see unless you have things inverted
the geometry does change when ways are ground, but usually by a few thousandths- shouldn't be a huge problem
Turcite and Rulon are routinely used for heavily worn machines
