I just got a very nice Boyer schultz 6x12 surface grinder in very good condition with all the original scrapings on the way. looks like it hasnt been used much at all. Here is the problem. When you turn the spindle back and fourth quickly by hand it makes a klinking sound. It has around 1" of play before the motor catches. When you first turn it on you can hear the klink sound for a second- klink-klink-klink and thats it. I have used this grinder and when running it is very smooth and has a nice finish, no bearing noise. Is there some kind of coupler between the motor and the splindle like the way they have a hydraulic pump to a motor shaft? I never owned a surface grinder but I have used them for years and never noticed this on others. What the heck can this be? I don't want to tear it down till I hear from the pros. Thank you Jason.

There is a lovejoy coupler between the motor and spindle. Thats most likely your problem. Not a big deal.

What can happen the Lovejoy rubber link can wear and fall apart. Problem is you have to pull the motor to inspect it. It is not dificult to do but the 4 set screws have to be reached through the holes in the side of the motor support. two on each side. Have some one support the motor as you loosen the set screws.

Do you know what size I need L-50 ? L-70?

I will have to look at the spare we have at work. Unfortunately this week is not very good but I will try.

I found the spare motor and spindle, the Lovejoy rubber is marked L-070. It is hard and half chipped away so I will have to get another one to replace it.
