I'm just starting to use the boring head. Do you tighten the gib to a sliding fit, and then adjust the boring bar as needed, or is it loosen>adjust>tighten for each pass?

Loosen adjust tighten, for each pass, yes.

I adjusted my Criterion gib 30 years ago and have never touched the screws since, no reason to tighten the gib up to hold it at all.

I agree, but to each his own. Some people do loosen and retighten every time. I would assume the quallity of the boring head is a factor as well.

I have 2 Criterion, i Bridgeport, and a Universal. Never lock any of the gib screws. Never had a problem holding position. Granted, the screws are pretty snug, but hardly what I would consider locked. A smooth movement with a short arm hex key and they stay set for me.

YMMV, but it's always worked for me, even using other boring heads. It seems that I was taught that way, I guess. Since the late 70's, anyway. That's the first time I remember using one. It was a Criterion.
