Blind Slotting

Now I must ask this questions.
Recently I changed the leather surrounding on my cars shifter(its a stick shift).
And broke the reverse stopper since it was plastic. Now I have turned a stainless steel one.
But in the inner diameter it needs a blind slot.
My question is how to break the chips when the tool has reached the end of the slot?
I would probably make a custom tool for this slotting operation and machine it on the lathe with hand force.

If you have any suggestions do tell me. Since this is my very first slotting of this kind.

Thanks,
Tarmo

I picture this slot ending at a dead end concrete wall and needs a slot? Is the part large enough for
a drilled relief hole? I am thinking myself with shaper with no alternative, I would blow air in there
or make a cut blow it another another time consuming but thats all I can think of. sam

Two options to break the chips for a blind internal slot(keyway)
As stated you can drill a hole thru the wall of the part
or
You can machine a internal groove in the bore.

Sounds like your cutting the slot in a very tight hole being it a part from a shifter. So, you are going to need to take very light cuts for sure. Your also going to need a carriage stop that holds well, and doesn't creep. If you take your time, and clear the chips out reg, you should get through the job without to much trouble. I would make the cuts no deeper than 0.002 at a time, and make a few spring cuts with every pass before advancing the tool in for the next.

Yes it is in a fairly thight spot. The slot is inside the stopper collar. The shifter shaft is 12mm in diameter and that shaft has a key welded to it, to keep the collar from rotating.
The slot is from one end of the collar and ends in the center of the collar. I will try very shallow doc as I only need about 1mm of actual slot.
Thanks for sharing.
