Hello all, let me start by telling you what I have on the lathe currently. It’s a belt drive Enco 12 x 36 from 1986 . I’m running a 1hp motor ,3 phase with a vfd. Looking to upgrade the motor to a 2 hp since my current motor is malfunctioning. Just wanted some recommendations for motor size, RPM, frame size. Was hoping to catch someone who has worked with these older Taiwanese machines. Thanks in advance

well, you want the same frame size. You just want to up the motor.
I went to a 2hp 3ph motor on my mill, which had I think a 3/4 hp single.
I don't regret it at all. I can run very low rpm and it doesn't complain when I need the torque.

I have a pair of Shemwai SW900B lathes(1236) Taiwanese
I did a 56 frame 2hp 1750 rpm on one , 56 frame 3hp 1750 rpm on the other .
The 2hp is sufficient for just about everything

That’s right, just upping the hp. The motor that’s on her now is a 1hp 3 phase but she’s drawing way too many amps on start up and it’s tripping my vfd. Could always use more power. That coupled with the the shipment from grizzly which contains a brand new back splash for my Enco. I decided that now is the time to do the swap, as if I don’t have enough going on already, lol. Gonna check on eBay and see if I can luck up on a good motor. I have a couple here that I picked up pretty cheap. Got a 3hp baldor that I wish I could fit and an older 2 hp however neither has the correct frame. The baldor is a 184 frame and it’s pretty large to boot. The century does have a PA56HZ frame. It’s wired for high voltage at the moment

Thank you for posting those. I will use those as reference material. Looks close to the same platform as my Enco.

Quick question for you guys. Mine has a 143T frame 1hp 7/8 shaft 1760rpm. What are my options? Would a 145T work? Seems like the frames are pretty standard based on what the hp ratings are. Finding a 2hp with a 143T frame is not going to be doable from what I can see

baldor has a good sheet on frames, what the output shaft size is, and other info.
Then it's a matter of seeing if the mounting plate or flange depending aligns with what you have.
