I'm building a stand for my 10" Baldor bench grinder. Since I have limited space in my garage I need to make it compact and movable. I looked at the HTC HGP-10 stand but it's a bit expensive and I don't need or want adjustable height. Has anyone tried one of these or built anything similar? I'm planning on 32" fixed height and 4 leg base with a couple Mason leveling pads in the back corners and 3" locking swivel casters in front. I'm planning to use some 2x1 rect tube I have for the legs. The post is 2" sq tube and the plan is to weld the legs on at 45 deg angles to the bottom of the post. The scrap pieces of rect tube I have are 10" long. That works out to about an 18" square base when you lay it out (see pdf). Does that seem too small? I need it as compact as possible to fit somewhere between stuff when I have a vehicle in to work on it. But I definitely don't want it to tip over in use as the grinder weighs about 135lbs. If anyone has built something similar I would appreciate hearing how big your base is and how well it works. Thanks, Steve

I have a 10" baldor that came with the factory pedestal stand. The base footprint isnt very large although it does have mounting holes to secure it to the floor. For now I have it on a pc of plywood w/4 little caster wheels. If you build your own stand, having it on wheels somehow will make it easy to move around esp in your garage. 2 wheels and 2 leveling feet seemes to work on the small welding table i made. Semi mobile but not rolling around on ya in use.

Thanks, the regular stands are definitely designed to be bolted down. Do you know what the spacing is on your casters? Is it fairly stable the way you have it? I can tack this all together and test it but I was hoping that someone else who has already figured out what works could speed up the process a bit. Steve

Here you go. I have ones like these. Some are modified with some shop/drops to hold a light.

I posted some of my trials and work on making a mobile grinder stand but it was lost in the crash today. It is too much to do again with my one good hand. However I ended up mounting my 10" Dayton grinder on this and I love it cause it is stable and easy to move around. It is only 80lbs and not as heavy as yours but what i like is it doesnt move, shake and rattle like my homemade stand did. This was only $20 with the coupon. I'm in the process of doing the same with a Eastwood 2 speed buffer as soon as I get to HF. I just decided not to overthink a stand this time.

3/4 or 1 ton truck scrap rear differential will yield 2 grinder stands. Flip brake drum open side down. Put axle in drum "backwards" using lug nuts to bolt the two together.
Disassemble diff and use the side gear "spider gear" on the splines of the axle. Weld side gear to a piece of plate. If you want the top to be indexable/removable don't weld the side gear to the axle.
The whole unit rolls rather easily on the drum. If you need extra weight you can fill the open drum with concrete or weld in hunks of steel.
