Belt grinder wheels

I wonder if belt grinder wheels can be made from steel, not aluminum?

No reason why not, other than weight, the Rockwell 6" belt grinders have steel wheels, but they are hollow.

I have made and use some steel wheels on my 72" belt sander. They are made from 1" black water pipe.
I have one on each end of my "square wheel" attachment I've been using for a few years with no problems.
