As I continue to learn more about this machining hobby I continue to read about new tooling for my Sherline Mill and Lathe. Side note, I am convinced that right when I have procured every piece of tooling in the world for these machines I will end up moving to a place with more space for larger machines and get to start over... I kid, kind of.

That said, I have a bunch of the Sherline collets but they are all pretty small. I have found a variety of posts related to the Beall Collet Chuck and their collet sets. I am considering buying this to enable larger work holding. The one comment I found was that at one time they made a version for Sherline and one for Taig but now only make one? Has anyone purchased one of these chucks for a Sherline recently and if so, is it working as desired?

Thank you
Kevin

Can't help with your primary question. I had a Beall ER32 collet chuck for a SB9A at one point. As I recall, it was not hardened and may have been made from fairly soft steel, maybe even 12L14. If so, either or both, with much use, it would likely wear in spots. Best check into that, if such a situation would matter to you.

Thank you

I have asked Beall and provided them the spindle size, hoping they provide some guidance here.

Looks like it may not be an option anymore. Asking around but I may need to attempt to make one unless someone is willing to part with theirs.

I would look at a straight shank ER-25 or ER-32 collet holder, cut down the shank to the desired length and thread a 3/4-16 on the back. Others have mounted the collet to the lathe back plate but a lot of stick out and weight for a small machine. Probably would stay with an ER-25 on something that small. In order to keep the TIR down, I most likely would put a precision ground bar in a collet and hold that in a chuck and dial down the TIR, bore and then thread the back thread.

Beall closed about a year ago when the owners retired. Lee Valley took over many of their products including the collet chuck. Unfortunately they didn't decide to continue offering it for 3/4"-16.

Thank you both

I will investigate working on a chuck per the recommendation above

I've kind of done this. The good news is the Sherline lathe and mill are very nice for doing small projects so I still use them often despite having the larger machines.

As for the collets, another option is Taig's ER16 collet chuck. Taig has a longer spindle, so Taig accessories tend to work fine on Sherline machines, but Sherline accessories on a Taig require a spacer. For some reason Taig calls it an adaptor instead of a chuck.

Taig ER16 collet adaptor

I have both a Beal ER32 collet chuck and a Taig ER16 chuck. The Beall chuck is 3-4" long but the ER16 chuck is only about an inch long. I have the Model 4400 with 17" between centers so the longer chuck isn't really an issue, but with one of the 8" models it could be.

Thanks Aaron!

Good to hear you still use your Sherline equipment. I do really enjoy using them.

I will pick up that ER16 and a set of collets, that could actually address my need for now.

Thank you! It is really useful to know about this Taig adapter option.

I am planning to get a second headstock for Sherline, to be used with (a vertical column and in future) a mill; it is not pleasant to move the one I have back and forth. But I am leaning towards their ER-16 headstock. (Any advice on that choice?)

If you could tell how accurate the adapter is, I'd really appreciate it.

FWIW I bought a set of Technik collets already (was on sale) and also one of their "DIN" collets and nut. The latter promises a very low runout, don't recall exactly but maybe something like 2 thou a.k.a. 5um. That is, presumably, in addition to the spindle runout.
